What are the details of teeth whitening?

It's safe, quick, and can really change your smile.  Just let us know at any appointment if you would like to whiten your teeth. You can lighten only your upper teeth or both the upper and lower, depending on the contours of your mouth and smile.  We offer take home bleaching trays, or in-office power bleaching.

For home whitening your custom bleach trays will be ready for you to pick up in our office in a day or two.  We provide you with whitening gel that you put into your clear trays. With just a few minutes of wear per day, the bleaching gel removes stains right out of your enamel in a very short time without altering tooth structure or damaging existing dental work.  When your teeth reach the desired brightness, only occasional touch ups are needed to maintain your new smile. We will take a shade of your teeth coloration before and after whitening.  Dental whitening can be used to correct tooth discoloration. Discolorations can be caused by staining, aging, or chemical damage to teeth. Using the latest in bleaching technology, we can offer a safe method for creating a beautiful “brilliant” smile. In cases of extreme tooth discoloration, crowns or veneers may be the only choice athough it is always advisable to try whitening first.

What is the procedure for whitening?   An impression is taken to make specialized dental trays to hold the whitening gel against the teeth.  Trays are made for the patient and at delivery the patient is instructed how to whiten his teeth using the custom trays and gel.  For In house Power Whitening the patient will have his teeth whitened in the office with a power solution administered on teeth with gums protected by barrier gels. 

Over-the-counter bleaching agents are available for purchase at drug stores and pharmacies. However, there are many variations in these products and variations of the strenths of the bleaching agents some which may be harmful to gums and teeth.  We do not recommend over the counter products due to the lack of monitoring the application of the product or the results.
