Teenagers and Young Adults
Teenagers and Young Adults need to develop and maintain good oral habits and hygiene. Studies have shown that dental problems may interfere with concentration and learning in school. In addition to physical discomfort due to dental problems, teens and young adults are at an age where they are highly self- conscious, and their self esteem is developing. It is very important to feel good about your mouth. A happy mouth is a healthy mouth. Nice clean teeth boost everybody’s confidence.
Beverages containing high levels of sugar/or acids, including energy drinks, can quickly wreck havoc on teeth. Young people need to be proactive about their oral even more diligent and maintain meticulous oral hygiene. Daily brushing and flossing is still the most effective way to fight decay. Electric toothbrushes may be beneficial in order to encourage regular brushing. Good hygiene also prevents gum disease which can occur even as a teenager. Persistent bad breath (halitosis) and red gums may be a sign of gum disease. Poor oral hygiene results in inflamed, reddish gums, and tooth decay. Lack of brushing builds up a layer of plague giving the impression of having “furry” teeth. Plaque hardens and becomes calculus, leading to gingivitis, gum disease, loss of bone, mobility of teeth (teeth get loose) and finally to the permanent loss of teeth. Teenagers and young adults need to remember that their set of permanent teeth is the only one we will every have. Teeth need TLC so they can last you a life time. With today’s technology and materials everyone should be able to keep their teeth much longer than previous generations.
During the teenage years and and young adulthood some will be bothered by the eruption or non eruption of wisdom teeth. Our office can refer you to an oral surgeon for extraction of impacted wisdom teeth.
